Up In The Air

                         Cloud Computing:The Game Changer....
It has been quite a long time since my last post primarily owing to my semester exams,I couldn't post but now all that is over and done,I can get back to more interesting things. Now before we start, let me inform you that this will be my last post on this blog. But don't worry there is a new blog on the cards and its going to be better than this one.
So let us begin with the topic, cloud computing is a technology which has the potential to revolutionize the IT industry and the web arena. Its not a new concept but the coinage of the term is relatively new,we all use the cloud without even realising it.Let me name a few things which will help to demystify the Cloud.G-mail,Blogs,Facebook apps even Facebook and other social networking sites.Dropbox,A search engine called Kloudless,iTunes,Apple's icloud etc.

The Cloud is an archaic term for the internet,in the pristine days of the web development the Internet was referred to as the cloud primarily because of its all pervasive and all encompassing nature. As I have illustrated through the examples the universal nature of cloud computing is essential to its existence hence it has become the sine qua non of modern society.
The roots of cloud computing can be traced back to the 1960's when John McCarthy an eminent computer scientist envisioned that the Internet can one day be used as a public utility. This idea was further propagated by Herb Grosch, whose theory of computing machines states that:"The speed of a computer is directly proportional to the square root of its cost." Thus if a machine 'A' costs twice as much as a machine 'B' then 'A' will function at speeds which are quadruple of that of  'B'.
But the pioneering idea in this field was propounded by Douglas Parkhill in his book"The Challenges of Computer Utility",where he envisaged that one day all of the world's information will be controlled by 15 supercomputers.Today we have come a long way the dreams of all such luminaries have been realized we have moved beyond the basic definition of the internet to integrate it with reality thereby giving it the prowess to alchemize every aspect of our lives with its Midas touch.

Let me elucidate this arcane technology with a few parallelisms and examples.Consider your mobile recharge facility where you are free to choose your subscription for recharge and the services will be provided by the service provider accordingly.Today there is so much more you can do with your smartphone there are millions of apps to choose, hundreds of songs to download and games to play. You can change you service provider any time you like, thus you have the freedom to choose and adjust according to your need this is referred to as "scalability" in the technical jargon.
Similarly consider the electricity grid, which provides the client with power through an extensive network of grids and wires. The consumer is not aware of how the electricity is generated or transmitted, thus he only accesses the services without going into the technical details of the process. This is known as "data abstraction".Hence we use the services of the internet through data abstraction cause we are not aware how it functions,we have no idea how our emails are stored in the webservers and how it is transmitted.
Now consider the following example there is a  start up company, which is fast blooming, its employees are burgeoning, its profits are rising so what it needs is a greater database to store all the data about its employees not only this it requires the hardware and software and the professionals to get this job done.
This is too much to ask from a start up because new investment will drain its coffers and when  hard times like the recent Financial Tsunami come knocking it won't be able to weather it.So whats the solution..I say why not designate it to a third party, yes this is where cloud service providers come in,they will provide you with their software as a service they will provide you the storage space ,the servers and the platform to carry out your business. Thus you don't need to make a one time investment to cater to your needs you need to subscribe to the cloud provider and this subscription can be adjusted according to your contracts and need of the hour this is what we call as an "elastic cloud".This saves money, time, space and lets you concentrate on your core business more effectively. Thus cloud computing converts "licensing to leasing".
Now let me introduce you to the holy trinity of the Cloud network, they are SaaS(Software as a Service),PaaS(Platform as a Service),and IaaS(Infrastructure as a Service). The IaaS and SaaS together contribute to the development of PaaS through a method called "virtualization".

SaaS:

Software as a service is the most common form of cloud computing that we use, everyone of us uses it almost on a daily basis,we all download softwares from the internet.Similarly when a corporation is in need of a software for a specific period of time, for example a catering company is in need of a storage place and a database management system to synchronize and store it orders during the festive season. It would be cumbersome to buy a DBMS and storage space to maintain the orders,so the easy way out is to designate the job to a software provider the software provider will lease its product to you,as per your requirement thus it will save a lot of green bucks for you and allow you be proficient in your core job. This is known as "enterprise cloud computing" and this helps to empower the small start ups.Hence software is being provided as a service as an utility. This is a paradigm shift from licensing software to leasing software.
The simplest example is Facebook apps which you can use and discard according to your needs, most of us use the apps like CityVille and Farmville I myself use some less known apps like the Washington Post Social Reader,Embeepay etc.

PaaS:

Platform as a service this encompasses the two other aspects of Cloud computing, here the service provider provides the platform to the client, thus in this "client-server" model, the provider develops the know-how,sets up the logistics and builds the infrastructure needed to provide the platform to the client. But how does the cloud provider benefit from all this, incurring such a high investment for a single client is just not done, here in comes the term "multiple tenancy",all the clients have an access to the same software and the same resources thus the same service is provided to multiple clients and the provider rakes in the collective profit.
The easiest example of this is the Blog,Google has provided me with this blog which is a platform to write articles. In the same way Google provides this services to all its users giving rise to multiple tenancy.Similar is the case with the G-mail.I leave it to you to complete this parallelism.

Iaas:
Infrastructure as a Service, the last block in the multi-layered cloud computing and the most important, setting up the necessary infrastructure involves, setting up servers, buying the necessary softwares and getting professionals to do your job. This infrastructure is the centerpiece in the development of the SaaS and the PaaS.For example a payroll management company needs some extra computers to store its data only during the first 2 months of the year,it can't afford to buy new computers and install them with the latest softwares. But here comes the Messiah-The cloud provider will provide you virtual OS on its servers thus providing free desktop, free OS,free storage space.Apple's icloud provides all these services and its all for free for the apple users.

Now having described the three important layers of the Cloud-SaaS,PaaS,IaaS,it becomes imperative to describe a few variations of the cloud: Public,Hybrid,Community and Private. The names of the cloud are self explanatory.

All the major companies are investing heavily in this vibrant technology, indeed they should because this is an open sesame to achieve your ends.Microsoft's Azure OS is cloud based,Apple's iCloud which I have already mentioned.Amazon is today the key player in this field with AWS(Amazon Web Services) and S3(Server Storage Space) which is predicted to rake in 750 million dollars in 2011.SaaS is set to expand to the size of $72.9 billion by 2015 as per the reasearch done by Gartner.
IBM the dethroned hero has regained some of its former glory by launching its cloud services. So have the hardware firms like HP and DELL.According to research the start up companies are the ones to benefit most from these services some of the small firms providing cloud services are Nasuni,Salesforce.com,icloud computing services etc.But the big daddy of this game is yet to shed its wings,it has just launched its services and is now waiting in the wings-the name is today's Buzzword its called Google, yes the search engine Giant has just entered the market with its App engine and the Google music store.Having a powerful backing of the android google is poised to takeover the cloud market of the smartphone even while it faces stiff competition from the likes of Apple and IBM.

Thus having explained all this new technology, need to mention about the Cloud expo held recently in which the major advantages of this emerging Giant was discussed. The founders of this technology believe that this is the future of the web but they are quick to add a word of caution we should not overvalue this rising star nor saturate its market in either case, this will result in the fall from grace,of the infamous internet as had happened during the "DOT-COM bubble " of  early 2000.

Thus we must walk forward in the pure radiance of the past, look back ponder, contemplate, comprehend and then move forward if we want to realize our vision of a highly connected virtual world which is UP IN THE AIR

'C'ing through

                        The Unsung Hero

The real heroes always work behind the scenes,in the past week the crafters of the modern digital era have passed away. But what strikes me the most about their deaths  is how it evoked different reactions from the media and the people in general. On one hand we have Steve job’s larger than life image and apple’s ‘i’ touch and on the other we have Dennis Ritchie, a far greater genius the creator of  C programming language and the co creator of Unix.Today, while reading an article in Economics Times of India titled “The other man behind your ipad”,took me on the plane of philosophy and reflection about who the world cares about more and who has impacted the world in a greater way.Well lets go back to the roots ,a journey down the memory lane. It is a story of a man who had “embedded”  himself in all our digital systems and left an indelible impact on the world of programming. So let us ‘C’ his-story,Dennis Macalastair Ritchie(DMR) as he was popularly known ,was a researcher at the Bell labs, while working at the Artificial Intelligence lab at MIT,he was given a project to create an OS for the MIT computer labs, hence he deftly used his ingenuity to conjure the Unics ,an improved version and slightly different form of which he would develop independently two years later along with his long time associate Ken Thompson. It literally had the ‘X’ factor in it the Uni’x’ operating system was like a gift of quail and manna to the computer scientist’s community. It had filled the long awaited void in the operating system market and soon with the development of the world wide web it became instrumental in crafting the future of the internet.
But DMR’s most dexterous brainchild was yet to be established something, which is and has been potent enough to alchemize every aspect of the software arena with its Midas touch. The year was 1969,everywhere in the world there was a social awakening the Beatles had hit the billboards,The Summer of Love had just ended giving a radical preamble to the proximity and difference between the sexes. It was in the midst of such maelstrom of changes that the C programming language was developed single handedly by Ritchie. It was developed from the existing “B” programming language at the time. But had faculties far greater than the existing languages like B,FORTRAN,PASCAL and ALGOL.
This had ushered in the new era of software development and opened the floodgates for the growth of the software companies, and brought in the IT revolution of the modern era. From submarines to washing machines and dishwashers C program codes were embedded in almost all digital system. This was because of the portability and robustness of the language. This was a free software so anybody could download it from the internet and further  develop on it like the open source softwares which were to follow in a few decades later.Same was the case with the Unix OS.
Now it so happens that Berkeley University in California, had developed it own version of the Unix and marketed it under the brandname of BSD(Berkeley Software Distribution). It was on this BSD that the Mac OS was developed and if you look at the OS of your present ipad it reads BSD 4.2.Hence it all traces back to the humble origins of the Unix .And as for the C it was standardized by the American National Standard Institute(ANSI-C).All the modern programming languages were developed from C.Hence,a popular saying among tech historians is B gave birth to C , C to C++ ,C++ to Java which now rules over the internet.
A recipient of Turing award from the ACM and the Hamming Medal from IEEE,Ritchie has also co-authored the book The C programming language popularly known as K&R.He also received the National Medal for Technology in 1999 from president Clinton. He spent his last years in Berkeley hills, CA, led a sequestered life and survived prostrate cancer. But in the end succumbed to the infirmities and frailties of old age.
But here’s the burning question the thing that bugs me the most, why did the man who changed the world radically received so less media coverage as compared to the man who sold only tablets and phones. It was perhaps fate or maybe choice that one decided to remain out of the public glare because Real heroes know true happiness doesnot lie in the glare of the television cameras or the applause of the crowd, but doing  in something which satiates you, gives you a blissful realization that at the end of the day you can go to bed knowing that you did something really wonderful which affected millions of lives and changed the course of the future.Throughout  the annals of time there have such people who remained ambiguously obscure but worked their way through to the zenith.Today while reading The K&R book and contemplating about the things which matter and which don’t , things which are there for the long haul and things which are  swept away by the sands of time.I feel humbled to inherit that royal lineage and regal vision of the C-man,and consider myself fortunate to live in a time of such great men .In fact it is the zeitgeist which imbibes me with hope and faith that the future belongs to those who endear disregarding popular public opinion . Its difficult to swim against the tide  but once we do that we reach the place which destiny has in store for us.

The Uncertain Future

The Clash of the Titans

In the past week the world has lost one of the greatest visionaries of the century ,the man who gave a new prefix to the most important and controversial biblical fruit is no more. His death in more than one ways marks the end of an era and the begining of a new one.But in this new age of networking the battle for the control of the web world continues.Microsoft has its well defined and limited resource base its software applications will be limited and users almost constant its bing search engine is way out of league with google and so is the windows moblie software in comparison to the android. So let me name the players of this game Facebook,Google,Amazon and Apple.Yes though you may not agree with me apple has huge potential eventhough it has lost its founder its arsenal is potent enough to bounce back in the league its capture of the smartphone market will pave the way for the future expansion in the webworld in an unprecedented manner.

For now let us concentrate on the holy trinity Google,Facebook and Amazon. Each one controls a specific part of the cyberworld which affects each of our lives in more than one ways some perceptible some not so apparent.Google the search engine giant and the mailing mogul.Facebook the Sultan of Social networking and Amazon the leader in consumer products.Google has recently posed quite a veritable threat to Facebook's monopoly of the social networking market with the launch of its own site Google+ as most of you are well aware of this.Facebook on the other hand has taken a bite out of google's adsense and adwords pie by deflty alloying ads of the social network and with the launch of the Timeline in the f8 conference it is poised to take on Google.Amazon the pioneer in maketing advertisement and delivery of consumer products has decided to ruffle some feathers with its “Kindle fire” which is a direct challenge to the ipad.Neither facebook nor Google have any maketing faculties like Amazon. While Amazon does lacks the social network as well as the search abilities which would have offered it a complete control of the web world.

While it will be difficult for Amazon to match the “Googlebot” its not impossible. If it manages to do that then it may dream to becoming close to the Supreme commander of cyberspace.Google needs Amazon's marketing skills and Facebook's 800 million population. While facebook needless to say need needs them both. Thus the future belongs to the one who can harness and integrate these three things.

Its Zuckerberg's genius against Sergey and Larry's ingenuity coupled with Jeff Bezos business acumen. The trio know very well that they are the future of the webspace until some dexterous dark horse comes along to change the battle topsiturvey.Apple on the other hand is a sleeping giant in this regard and much will depend on how well it can “Cook” its products and expand in the market with its new CEO.

There are several new startups which also have a footprint on the internet zygna, brightwurks, twitter, icloud computing services are to a name a few, with the rapid advance of cloud computing the companies are incorporating this developing technology as we have seen with apple and amazon.

For us the users its a wait and watch game to see who wins the big batlle and claims its foothold on the web arena. But we have a hand in deciding our the future as well because in the end its all upto the people to decide and that is one question which only time can answer.

Short Story

                    The Elevator Conversation

It was an eventful day in human history, the day the face of evil was anhilated, infact it was the epitome of the victory of good over evil for some. Yes the day Osama bin Laden was killed by the U.S. NAVY SEALS was greeted as a turning point in the war against terrorism but for me the aftermath of the death is far more significant, having lived through 9/11, I decided to visit the ground zero a day after the news broke. As I approached the turtle bay in the lower Manhattan area the events flashed before my eyes not only of that particular day but of the day before 9/11.

At that time I was working for the investment bank Goldman sachs my office was on the 55th floor on the north tower just two floors above the site where the first plane struck. I remember it was the tenth of September a nice, sunny day, autumn was in its full glory and as I passed by the UN headquarters the sun came out in great golden blasts from behind the skyscraper and produced a scintillating smile on my troubled face .The sun did its best to lighten my mood albeit unsuccessful, I was perturbed by the recent investments I had made in the Exxon Valdez oil stocks. I reached the north tower and made my way to the elevator I got up once the elevator arrived.

When we got to the next floor the elevator stopped and a man entered the elevator he was a bit unkempt but had a vibrant and sunny face. There were wrinkles on his forehead but his eyes didn’t give away the cause of those wrinkles they were gleaming, and the pale green colour of the eyes contrasted sharply with his jet black hair cropped closely into fringes. He had a suitcase and seemed to know his way around the place. There was a ring of mystery surrounding this man he didn’t look more than forty yet the expression of exuberance on his face made him too small for his years.

He wished me good morning  and asked me “how is it going”. I replied perfunctionarily “good morning to you, I am fine and good day to you sir” not meaning to converse further I stopped myself right there.
He thought otherwise, ignoring my lack of interest he went on saying,”Hello my name is Michael Kempton,I work for JP morgan chase my office is on the 54th floor “ and put forward his hand. I had no other option but to oblige him I offered my hand and said “My name is Michelle Brooks I am an investment banker I work for Goldman sachs my office is on the floor above yours”.

Then as we started talking it was mostly him that did the talking I learnt that he was a native of Nebraska and having spent most of his childhood there he graduated from Yale Business school and moved to New York when he got the offer from JP morgan . He specialized in share analysis and trend prediction. Having learnt that I decided to disclose my recent investments and ask him for some sane advice about the share prices of Exxon Valdez. He said the current prices of oil are all time lowest at $23 per barrel and if this continues the share prices are set to dip further unless he said with an eerie irony in his voice some unexpected turn of events is going to turn it topsiturvey.I didn’t realize it then that how true he was. We were on the 49th floor when I noticed he had a scar on the left cheek right below his eye.I asked him what gave him that token he said in a dreamy voice well it’s from one of the fights I had with my little brother when we were young I punched him in the face and broke his nose he on the other hand didn’t take things lying down and unleashed the prowess of his nails on my face and the result is before your eyes.I asked almost instinctively where is your little brother now. He replied rather quietly and shyly he is not among us anymore he is in a better place and I am soon going to join him.

His last words sent goosebumps through my spine,I felt a bit giddy standing there but somehow I could muster enough fortitude to ask him one last question “why what’s the matter with you?”.We had reached the 53rd floor by then and he looked at me and said with a generous smile on his face but a prophetic tinge in his voice “I am suffering from liver cancer I am in my last stages I can feel death beckoning me each passing day I can only delay his call but  cannot ignore it anymore” and as the 54th floor arrived he stepped out and embraced me with his divine smile. Before I could say anything the door closed and I didn’t realize  that I was standing in front of my office.

The next day was my day off from work usually I get my Thursdays off but since I had put in some extra hours of work the previous week I got that Tuesday day off too.I watched my TV set glow with the horrid images of the attack,I saw the fall of the twin towers and the graphic pictures of the most heinous crime committed in recent history. My hands were benumbed my head had stopped thinking I was completely flabbergasted, but I soon assuaged and salvaged myself from the situation. I called up my office to see if anybody was there I got no answer I called up my friends to see if they were okay some answered my frantic calls some didn’t ,God only knows what had happened to them.I don’t think I had courage enough to witness the gory scene anymore so instead I went to the church and prayed ,my faith in God and humanity had been shaken the edifice had revealed meandering cracks.I sat before the altar and prayed for friends and strangers alike.I prayed for His benevolence and magnanimity, and fervently implored Him to restore my faith in humanity.I also prayed to grant me the fortitude to weather the tempest and keep my faith when it has reached its nadir.

Today ten years on as I walk through those once familiar streets,I realize that human spirit is brought closer with grief, the fraternity is emboldened and the cause and message of peace in a violent world is made more resilient. There is no jubilation or euphoria in the city today with the dead of the most evil perpetrator. But on the other hand a muffled sense of relief because it marks the death of another man maybe evil still a death. The city condemned his cowardice and eulogized the victims for making the world a better place to live in,they were in their own sense the martyrs to the cause of humanity.

I reached the ground zero and saw the Liberty tower rising on the ashes of the twin towers like a phoenix.I saw several wreaths had been laid on the stones put in place on the ground, impregnated in those stones was the names of the victims. There was one especially large stone black in colour and the names inscribed were in white.I don’t know what drew me to that stone especially I laid my wreath there and began to read the names and I was dumbfounded to read the third name on it, it read “Michael Kempton – JP morgan chase” that about said it all.

I don’t know what ends were achieved by attacking the towers but one thing is for sure Michael was salvaged from his baneful existence which he didn’t let people realize,God had a better world in store for him I don’t know about the rest of the victims and their families but he was lucky to be in his office that day for he was spared from the grief and excruciating pain he would have endured.

Some people pass through your life and are lost in the crowd, some stick with you through thick and thin, some turn their backs on you when you need them the most. But once in a while you come across  people like Michael who leave their footprints in your heart forever, they are complete strangers yet they find their way in the sanctum sanctorum of your heart because you feel an inscrutable bond with them.

And about the shares yes Michael was right about them too spot on. I had a windfall after selling those shares post 9/11.But in more than one ways he gave me a fresh lease of life, a reason to believe and a faith to preserve.

The Rise Of Linux OS

This article will primarily deal with the rise of Open source software or the inception of the free software foundation of the late 80's and early nineties. The Free software movement was started by Richard Stallman who was at that time working at the Artificial Intelligence lab in MIT.That was in the early 80's Microsoft was on the rise,it was the first company to market software and its first OS was MS-DOS(Microsoft disc operating system). They had marketed the DOS and sold it to IBM other major PC manufacturers during that time. But the problem with Microsoft was it had licensed its software which means they did not reveal their source code. You had to buy their source code if you wanted to improve the OS but you were bound by the agreement that you cannot market your improved version, thus the freedom of the software hobbyists were taken away. This was a shrewd marketing policy which Bill Gates had devised and sure it did work wonders for the company, Microsoft had emerged as the World leader in Software in a matter of years. But Stallman and Eric S Raymond and some other guys at MIT were not going to take things lying down.Stallman founded the Free Software foundation which had begun developing its own OS GNU(Gnu's Not Unix). It was a kind of misnomer actually but it bore the testimony of Stallman's pioneering vision to make the OS different from the prevailing UNiX OS of the time.

In a matter of years the movement spearheaded by Stallman gained momentum they had developed a major portion of their software but, what was lacking was the Kernel. The Kernel is the most important part of the OS, it is the part which acts as a interface between the users commands and the hardware. It literally is a guiding star to the rest of the OS, as it shows the software how to react to a given command and how to give the required output
The codes were freely available on the internet for anyone to download and develop on that.

Then came along the Messiah-The Redeemer and the creator of Linux Kernel. It was Linus torvalds' brainchild,Linus was a Computer science major at the University of Helsinki. He had written the Kernel for the GNU operating system.Soon people started seeing the major advantages of Linux  was - it very fast and the apps which it provided were unmatched in it's time. For example The Apache web server client made Linux the preferred choice of OS for the Internet. In no time people began to see the major advantages of the Linux OS.
Hence the movement which had begun with a limited few spread to the masses, a whirlwind of change swept across the software market as more and more people began improving the Linux OS and organised themselves into communities the most famous Linux communities are Fedora, Mandriva,Ubuntu.
Whereas some of the important Linux Vendors are Red Hat, Debian Linux,VA Linux system etc.

It must be mentioned here that free software doesnot mean free of cost but freedom to work with it and improve it and market it.Similarly The first Linux Expo was organised in 1999 when the number of Linux users had crossed the 12 million mark a veritable threat to Microsoft's windows. In that conference the name Open source was formally adopted and all the copyrights, rules relating to its use were issued. The formal definition of Open source was also formally adopted.

Then the major companies like Oracle,Netscape,MySQL, had decided to reveal their source codes. Even the Prodigal son microsoft had decided to reveal a part of its Windows source code. This was the nature and magnitude of change which Linux had brought indeed it is a force to reckon with and its potency is not yet exhausted.
This was the David and Goliath story of our times and indeed true to its biblical predecessor David always triumphs over Goliath, because in the valley of Elah its faith, perseverance and courage that counts.
